Background:Sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, was recently approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. However, this drug does not cause significant side effects such as flushing, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. We therefore sought to examine the effect of sildenafil on sperm parameters in men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction.
Methods:We evaluated sperm parameters in 17 healthy male volunteers and 17 men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction using a validated sperm motility test, which is based on the motility of sperm from a man with erectile dysfunction. We evaluated the effects of sildenafil, and placebo on the number of motile sperm, sperm concentration, motility index, and total motile sperm count in men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction.
Results:Sildenafil caused significant increases in total sperm count, motility index, and motility index in men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction compared to placebo. In men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, there were no significant changes in sperm concentration, motility index, or total motile sperm count, compared to placebo. Treatment with sildenafil significantly reduced the number of motile sperm, sperm concentration, motility index, and total motile sperm count in men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction compared to placebo. In men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, sildenafil significantly improved the number of motile sperm and sperm concentration, sperm motility index, and motility index in men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction compared to placebo.
Conclusions:Sildenafil significantly improved the number of motile sperm, sperm concentration, motility index, and total motile sperm count in men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction.
A randomized, single-center, double-blind, placebo-controlled, blinded crossover study of sildenafil in men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction.
